Riverside Ragas: Rajan and Sajan Misra

Riverside Ragas: Rajan and Sajan Misra

Rajan and Sajan Misra are two of India’s finest singers of the North Indian style of Khyal, from the esteemed lineage of the Benares Gharana. They studied under their father, Pt Hanuman Prasad Misra and uncle Pt. Gopal Misra.

Translated as ‘imagination’, khyal is an elaborate and virtuoso style, demanding improvisational flexibility as well as careful attention to notation, phrasing and rhythm. The hallmark of the Misra brothers’ style is their superb intonation, beautiful imagination and yet traditional approach to the music. Their concerts include old compositions alongside their own, showcasing their amazing vocal range and technique.

Accompanying on tabla is Sanju Sahai, one of the finest and most sought after tabla players of his generation.

As part of GemArts' Riverside Ragas series Rajan and Sajan will also deliver a masterclass for advanced students to accompany this concert, for more information contact info@gemarts.org.
