Exploring South Asian classical music in change, progress, transition and influence with a bold diversity of ideas, approaches and experiences.
A Double Bill featuring: Giuliano Modarelli (guitar) and Kitha Balakirishnan (violin)

LOST RAGAS - Giuliano Modarelli (guitar)
This new music uncovers the secret history of traditional ragas that have been forgotten over time, combining them with modern electronic and jazz sensibilities to create a unique soundscape while honouring Hindustani classical composition. Giuliano Modarelli breaks new ground while treading the history of the lost ragas.

THE INFINITE ROAD - Kitha Balakirishnan (violin)
A new work on violin using highly established notes and ornamentations (gamakams), but applying them to non-traditional structures, Kitha uses traditional structures and symbolism of Carnatic music to transpose her own reference offering a musical journey to the audience that is not only engaging but enlightens the process.

“I am seeking a mindset in which I am released from the conventional rigid structure and expectation of recital and instead I want to explore expression and making statement”

Kitha is joined by percussionists Abhiram Sahathevan and Mithushan Sivagurunathan.

Divergence is commissioned by zer0classikal.

Presented with GemArts and Sage Gateshead.
