As part of Freespill poetry night at Masala Festival, this creative writing workshop invites you to explore your roots and celebrate South Asian culture and heritage through storytelling and poetry. In a supportive, experimental space, you'll have the chance to create new work, whether you're trying creative writing for the first time or you're a seasoned poet. Two participants will also have the exciting opportunity to share their work on the Freespill open mic at the festival.

Tahmina Ali is a British-Bangladeshi, Geordie spoken word poet, producer, facilitator and creative practitioner. She has been awarded the ‘ABC Arts and Culture Award’ twice for her innovative and thought-provoking creations, and commitment to supporting the community through her work. Tahmina is the founder and host of poetry night, Freespill which has collaborated with Gem Art’s Masala Festival twice. Tahmina has been mentored by world renowned poets; Hollie McNish and Deanna Rodger. She has headlined poetry nights across the region and performed on large platforms such as the BBC and The Glasshouse.
