Contemporary Asian Youth Arts Project
The Brewery Arts Centre worked in partnership with GemArts & South Lakeland Young Carers and delivered a two year pilot project that set out to give groups of young carers from across South Lakeland the opportunity to devise and create their own urban street culture.
The arts project enabled engagement with young carers who are one of the most vulnerable groups of young people in society. The nature of their family circumstances and responsibilities means they are often marginalised from cultural activity with very limited opportunities to participate. This is exacerbated when they live in rural areas, where arts opportunities, are generally very limited.
Through a collaborative, artistic process the participants worked together to reduce isolation, consider issues affecting their lives, build personal, creative and team skills, and raise their confidence and self esteem in a creative, supported context.
In 2010, a group of young carers visited Newcastle Upon Tyne to take part in arts workshops, watch live shows and visit North Eastern Landmarks.
The groups worked with various professional artists throughout the project including Urban Khatak Dancer: Sonia Sabri, Musicians: Tigerstyle DJs and Visual Artist: Sumit Sarkar.
The young people created and performed their own arts work and developed the skills to programme their own urban festival, From Asia to the Brewery Festival held in July 2011 at The Brewery Arts Centre.
