GONG Festival Workshops
10 BME ladies from Gateshead Visible Ethnic Minorities Support Group Womens Group took part in 4 half day workshops exploring Indonesian music and textiles. The artwork was displayed on BALTIC Square on 16th July 2011 at GONG Festival....Celebrate Indonesia! Event.
The three banner and bunting workshops in partnership with BALTIC complimented the festival and aimed to create artwork with the local community that will be used to decorate Baltic Square for the performance. Musician Sue Finn, also delivered one complimentary Gamalan workshop so that the group could learn more about the Gamalan, Indonesia and its culture.
Participants Feedback:
- I really enjoyed the textile workshop as it helped me find my hidden potential. I learnt art and above all I had a great time,
- I loved using the wax to draw,
- I learned about mixing colours and the use of wax on paint,
- This was the first time Id heard about wax art, it was really different and I really enjoyed it! Everything was different so I learned lots about music and colours
- I liked the silk painting, it was the first time I tried it,
- I liked the way they taught me. I liked the equipments and the artists,
- I learnt something new and it was a pleasure
- Different and soothing music, a new experience, very creative and enjoyable!
The GONG Festival, 1-18 July, was the first North East Gamalan Music Festival. GemArts in partnership with GONG, programmed a performance of the Ramayana on stilts at Baltic Square on 16th July.
