Sivaloka and Ghatam - ATMA Dance

The UK tour of new works Sivaloka and Ghatam launched Boonham’s innovative new company ATMA. The choreographer used the Bharata Natyam dance language to reflect upon the meeting of ancient Indian thought with contemporary experience. She brought together an international team of award-winning collaborators including: India’s leading electronica composer-duo, Midival Punditz; vocals by bollywood ...singer Shankar Mahadevan; lighting designers Guy Hoare and Clare O’Donoghue and costume designers Moritz Junge and Becs Andrews.

Commissioned by GemArts and inspired by the dramatic, rock-cut Elephanta temple in India, Sivaloka explores the concept of Siva, a unique contribution of Indian thought to the understanding of the human condition. Creating an immersive space, Boonham's choreography shifts and changes within Siva's paradoxical realm of opposites. Sounds created and recorded within the cave temple - where Boonham and her team of collaborators were given special access to the UNESCO World Heritage site - are used to drive the powerful and emotive music.

The piece toured the UK between Autumn and Winter 2010 to amazing reviews and culminated with a spring tour and final performance and workshops for GemArts at Dance City in May 2011.
