Schools

GemArts has over 17 years experience working with schools and community groups across the North East, providing educational and enjoyable learning experiences. Our participatory programme aims to promote creative learning and a greater understanding of people and their respective cultures. Our projects have featured in The Chronicle's Excellence in Education supplement, and we recently received an Excellence in Equality and Diversity award for our We Stand Together anti hate crime secondary school project.

Each year GemArts works with schools across the North East giving thousands of pupils the opportunity to take part in; visual arts, Chinese dance, African drumming, storytelling, singing, lyric writing and much more. We have a successful track record of collaborative work with schools, colleges and in alternative educational settings, programming arts projects as part of cultural diversity weeks, to enrich curriculum activity around internationalism and citizenship, and offering pupils and teachers the opportunity to learn something new and raise cultural awareness.

Workshop packages are tailored to suit a school’s specific requirements, which could be around curriculum subjects or themed weeks such as One World Week, Heroes & Villains, Chinese New Year, Black History Month, Human Rights Day, Anti Bullying Week, Hate Crime Awareness Week, Diwali Celebrations and much more.

GemArts workshops allow students to:
·         experience a new activity while working alongside professional artists
·         develop new skills and interests
·         improve confidence and self-esteem
·         achieve through creativity and enjoyment
·         improve communication, team working and social skills
·         explore issues, address stereotypes and life choices in a creative, enjoyable environment
·         create opportunities for positive work with diverse communities

“The group had only participated in traditional art mediums [previously]. It was nice to be able to use a digital media in the classroom. Furthermore, the SMSC (social/moral/spiritual/cultural) side of the GemArts workshops gave them very relevant insight towards issues in their local area.” Teacher feedback from an Anti Hate Crime animation project

"Gem Arts is a fantastic company. Their knowledge of various artists and artforms has enabled us to offer our children at Roman Road Primary time to work with an outstanding range of experts. These enjoyable experiences have developed their creativity and learning across the curriculum, as well as giving them an understanding of many world cultures…..and they have enabled us to achieve our Gold Artsmark Award and our second International Green Flag Award for Eco".
Teacher feedback, Roman Road
